چکیده

Useful equivalence-preserving operations based on antilinks are described. These operations eliminate a potentially large number of subsumed paths in a negation normal form formula. Those anti-links that directly indicate the presence of subsumed paths are characterized. These operations are useful for prime implicant/implicate algorithms because most of the computational effort in computing the prime implicants and prime implicates of a propositional formula is spent on subsumption checks. The problem of removing all subsumed paths in an NNF formula is shown to be NP-hard, even though such formulas may be small relative to the size of their path sets. The general problem of determining whether a pair of subsumed paths is associated with an arbitrary anti-link is shown to be NP-complete. Further reductions of subsumption checks are shown to be available when strictly pure full blocks are present. The effectiveness of operations based on anti-links and strictly pure full blocks is examined with respect to some benchmark examples from the literature.

Define Hybrid Class Resolving Disjointness due to Subsumption

The pattern “Define Hybrid Class Resolving Disjointness due to Subsumption” is proposed as a Logical Ontology Design Pattern (Logical OP) solving a problem of disjointness inconsistency caused by a subsumption relation. Further away from solving design problems where the primitives of the representation language do not directly support certain logical constructs, this pattern helps resolving a ...

Subsumption-Free Bottom-up Evaluation of Logic Programs with Partially Instantiated Data Structures

Most deductive databases impose restrictions on the terms that can be used in them: they require that generated tuples be fully ground, i.e. contain no variables. Without this restriction, query evaluation of general programs needs subsumption tests in order to terminate correctly, and subsumption tests are expensive. We study a class of programs that can handle terms with both variables and fu...

Exploiting Partial Information in Taxonomy Construction

One of the core services provided by description logic (DL) reasoners is classification: determining the subsumption quasi-ordering over the concept names occurring in a knowledge base (KB) and caching this information in the form of a directed acyclic graph known as the concept hierarchy or taxonomy. For less expressive DLs, such as members of the EL family, it may be possible to derive all th...

Empirical Investigation of Subsumption Test Hardness in Description Logic Classification

Recently, modular techniques have been employed for optimising Description Logic reasoning, specifically to enable incremental reasoning and improve overall classification time. Classifying a module of an ontology should be significantly easier than reasoning in the whole ontology. However, we observed in previous work that neither it is generally true that modular reasoning techniques have a r...
